L’esame del fondo oculare (o fundus oculi), consiste nell’esame delle strutture oculari collocate posteriormente all’iride e al cristallino: corpo vitreo, retina centrale (polo posteriore, contenente la macula, sede della visione più definita), retina periferica, porzione intraoculare del nervo ottico (papilla ottica). Per esplorare queste strutture è necessario dilatare la pupilla instillando alcune gocce di collirio midriatico. La pupilla inizia a dilatarsi dopo 10-15 minuti e rimane dilatata in modo ottimale per 45-60 minuti. L’esame del fondo oculare viene eseguito utilizzando strumenti dotati di una fonte d’illuminazione: lo studio dispone degli strumenti adatti sia per gli adulti che per i bambini.
